Summary of the Board of Education Meeting on September 28th, 2022

The September 28th, 2022 meeting of the Board of Education began with the following announcements out of closed session:

  • The Board took action to promote Judith Sanchez to Principal II at Leavenworth Elementary School.
  • The Board took action to hire Stacey Sandoval as Executive Director, Risk Management.

Next, Superintendent Nelson provided a brief report to the Board of Education, including:

  • Superintendent Nelson started his remarks recognizing National Hispanic Heritage Month, Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and Orange Shirt Day. Superintendent shared some great upcoming events to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, the important resource of dialing 988 for immediate mental health supports, and the history of Orange Shirt Day designed to commemorate the experiences of Native Americans who were forced to attend schools known as “residential schools”.
  • Superintendent went on to share several reminders and celebrations including:
    • Recruitment is underway for our Grow2Teach Fall Cohort and the next cohort of our Fresno Teacher Residency Program. Superintendent encouraged staff interested in teaching to reach out to Jackie Moua for more information on the Grow2Teach program and Jimia White for the Fresno Teacher Residency Program.
    • Asking our families and school site staff to ensure your contact information is up to date in ATLAS. ATLAS is where we pull contact information to send notification of emergencies and it is how the state determines where to send Pandemic EBT cards for qualifying families. Another round of P-EBT cards are coming out soon, so please update information today.
    • Thanking Amazon for stepping up as our lead sponsor of the State of Education Gala by donating $30,000 to the Foundation for Fresno Unified Schools. That donation supports our scholarship fund and creates more partnership opportunities between Amazon and our district.
    • Tickets are available through Friday for the State of Education Gala on Thursday, October 6th at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo. Get yours ASAP before they sell out! We’ve got some BIG news that you won’t want to miss. You can get your tickets at www.foundation4fusd.org.
    • Thanking Aera Energy for their generous $10,000 donation to Vang Pao Elementary to support a college and career-related field trip for third through sixth grade students.
    • Congratulating Leslie Loewen, Campus Culture Manager, for being recognized with the Earl Reum Award, voted on by the California Association of Directors of Activities. The award is given to recognize outstanding contributions in training and mentoring student activity directors.
    • Announcing to staff nominations are open for the Excellence in Education awards – now through October 28th. This year we have a new category for Department Management as well! You can find the link to the nomination form here or in your Employee Zone email.
  • Superintendent Nelson closed his remarks reminding all school site staff, families and students in grades 3-12 to please complete the Climate and Culture Survey now! The survey is available at go.fresnou.org/climate. He shared this video from our students to share the survey’s importance.
