The November 1st, 2023 meeting of the Board of Education began with the following announcements out of closed session:

  • The Board took action in closed session to approve Superintendent Dr. Nelson’s evaluation as positive.
  • The Board took action in closed session to promote Ivan Flores to Administrator in Human Resources/Labor Relations.
  • The Board took action in closed session to promote Ashley Aouate to Director in Information Technology.
  • The Board took action in closed session to direct further proceedings including but not limited to a supplemental investigation regarding a complaint appeal.

Next, the Board of Education heard from the Hoover Student Advisory Board Members.

Next, Superintendent Nelson provided a brief report to the Board of Education, including:

  • Superintendent Nelson started his remarks celebrating the tentative agreement reached between Fresno Unified and the Fresno Teachers Association. He shared that this agreement provides many benefits to our teachers, continues a fiscally strong budget, and most importantly supports our students. He specifically highlighted the agreement includes 16% in ongoing salary increases, an additional 5% in one-time payments, a Bridge to Medicare ensuring affordable, high-quality medical coverage for life upon retirement, substantive movement towards class size reduction, and charts a clear path forward for continued collaboration in hopes of avoiding this situation in the future.
  • Superintendent shared his thanks to several key groups of people including:
    • Our Board of Education,
    • Our Chief of HR and Chief Negotiator, David Chavez,
    • Our Deputy Superintendent, Misty Her,
    • Our Chief Financial Officer, Patrick Jensen,
    • Our Assistant Superintendent of Labor Negotiations, Annarita Howell,
    • Our Chief Communications Officer, Nikki Henry,
    • Our Chief Academic Officer, Natasha Baker,
    • Our attorneys Peter Schaffert and Nicole Tucker of AALRR,
    • Local Peacemakers Larry Dunn and Linda Hoff,
    • Experienced mediators and fact-finders Don Raczka, John Gray, Mitch Olson, and Jun Payoyo,
    • Our principals, instructional superintendents, assistant superintendents in Human Resources,
    • The Fresno Teachers Association especially President Manuel Bonilla, Executive Director Louis Jamerson, and Bargaining Chair Taylor Vizthum, and each and every one of our teachers, and
    • To our students and their families who have been the innocent bystanders wading through the difficulties of these negotiations, carrying the stress and uncertainty on your shoulders. It does not go unnoticed.
  • Superintendent acknowledged that we are all coming down from several months of high stress and sends his love to all as we heal and move forward together.
  • Superintendent acknowledged there are many additional amazing things happening across the district, but will save those for another meeting as he know this news is the top of mind for all. He finished with gratitude and perspective to be moving forward together on behalf of our students.
