The March 6th, 2024 meeting of the Board of Education began with the following announcements out of closed session:

  • The Board of Education took action in closed session to promote Darrin Person to Executive Director in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department.
  • The Board of Education took action in closed session on resolution # 24-47 to notify certificated administration of a potential reassignment to a lower duty year for the 2024-2025 school year.
  • The Board of Education took action in closed session # 24-46 to release an employee from an administrative position at the end of the 2023-2024 school year and reassign the employee in accordance with their credentials.
  • The Board of Education took action in closed session on resolution # 24-44 to reassign certificated teaching staff to classroom teaching positions.

Next, Superintendent Nelson provided a brief report to the Board of Education, including:

  • Superintendent Nelson started his remarks recognizing several celebrations during the month of March including Women’s History Month, National Social Work Month, Art Education Month, Music in our Schools Month, National Nutrition Month and this week is National School Breakfast Week.
  • Superintendent Nelson then shared remarks about the importance of attendance. Superintendent provided comments on the roles that families and staff play in making attendance a priority and reminded all that every day counts!
  • Superintendent Nelson then shared with families and staff that our Spring Climate and Culture survey is now open! Superintendent shared that participation and responses are crucial to how we continue improving our schools and our district. Invitations with links to the survey were sent via ParentSquare and are also available on the website at this link.
  • Superintendent Nelson then invited all to join the Foundation for Fresno Unified Schools event tomorrow, Spill The Tea, celebrating local female leaders and Women’s History Month. Tickets are available on the Foundation website at this link.
  • Superintendent Nelson also shared the Foundation’s annual Suit Drive is coming up from March 18th-22nd. Many locations will serve as donation location across the city, including Fresno Unified’s Education Center downtown and the Professional Development Center on E Street. All gently used or new suit items will go to supporting our junior and senior students as they prepare for internships, post-secondary opportunities, interviews, and employment opportunities.   • Superintendent Nelson shared several highlights and shoutouts including:
    • Congratulations to Patiño School of Entrepreneurship for being named a California Distinguished School!
    • Congratulations to Cambridge High School who was named a Model Continuation High School!
    • Well done to Sunnyside Teacher Jeannette Vestal whose efforts in financial life skills with her students were highlighted by Next Gen Personal Finance in their February newsletter!
    • Congrats also go to our Duncan JROTC drill team cadets who placed first in the Central California Drill Competition!
    • Gratitude to the Instructional Division and Parent University for a very successful Every Child Is A Reader Literacy Celebration last Friday at No Surrender! Superintendent shared this video highlighting the event.
