Summary of the Board of Education Meeting on March 20th, 2024

The March 20th, 2024 meeting of the Board of Education began with the following announcements out of closed session:

  • The Board of Education took action in closed session to promote Andrea Valdez to Principal II at Bakman Elementary School.

Next, Superintendent Nelson provided a brief report to the Board of Education, including:

  • Superintendent Nelson started his remarks highlighting the Foundation for Fresno Unified Schools’ second annual suit drive happening this week. Last year’s suit drive brought in more than 2,000 items of professional clothing and the Foundation is working to more than double that number this year.   • Superintendent Nelson then reminded all that IdeaFest 2024 is fast approaching on April 20th. The deadline to submit for the art competition is this Friday, March 22nd and a few booths at the event are still available on a first-come, first-served basis. All questions can be sent to
  • Superintendent Nelson then continued the ongoing conversation about improving attendance. He provided some tips and encouragement for families to improve attendance and opened our sites a district as places to seek assistance in this area.
  • Superintendent Nelson then reminded staff and families to please complete the Spring Climate and Culture Survey before the deadline this Friday, March 22nd. Links to the surveys can be found here.
  • Superintendent Nelson shared several highlights and shoutouts including:
    • Congratulations to Board Clerk Valerie Davis who will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award next week from the Southeast Fresno Community Economic Development Association (SEFCEDA)!
    • Congratulations to Mariah Mask-Johnson, an eighth grader at Sequoia, who was selected as the ACSA Region 9 awardee of the Every Student Succeeding award and scholarship. We wish the best of luck to Mariah as she heads to the state awards in November!
    • Congratulations to DeWolf teacher, Aaron Ramirez, who has been named AMAE’s Educator of the Year!
    • Congratulations to Kings Canyon Middle School for receiving their THIRD designation as a School To Watch by the CDE designating them as a high-performing middle school. Congratulations to Principal Ailanjian and the entire Kings Canyon team!
    • Shoutout to our Edison and Bullard Forensics teams who are advancing to the California High School Speech Association’s State Championships next month!
    • Congratulations to the Communications Team who received three state level awards from the California School Public Relations Association (CalSPRA)! The team received two awards of excellence and one of merit, including an award of excellence for our Faces of Fresno Unified Magazine!
    • Shoutout to Trustee Elizabeth Jonasson Rosas, the Parent University team, and our entire Roosevelt Region for a wildly successful Family Engagement event this past Monday. These events always gather hundreds of families, but the Roosevelt region took it to a whole new level with more than 2,000 families joining for the fun, resources, and learning!
    • Shoutout to the Foundation for Fresno Unified Schools for their first Spill The Tea event kicking off their Women’s Affinity Group for the Foundation. Superintendent Nelson also congratulated the Foundation, our Counseling teams, and our Communications team for a 44% increase in scholarship applications over last year!
    • Lastly, Superintendent Nelson thanked all who were able to participate in Read Across America this year and shared this video of our Trustees getting in on the action.
