Summary of the Board of Education Meeting on January 24th, 2024

The January 24th, 2024 meeting of the Board of Education began with the following announcements out of closed session:

  • The board took action in closed session to dismiss a certificated employee.

Next, the Board of Education heard from the Design Science Student Advisory Board Members.

Next, Deputy Superintendent Her provided a brief report to the Board of Education, including:

  • Deputy Superintendent Her started her remarks acknowledging that Superintendent Nelson is currently attending the ACSA Superintendent Symposium as is required in his employment contract.
  • Deputy Superintendent then took a few moments to acknowledge this week’s big and bittersweet news that Superintendent Nelson has accepted a tenure-track position in the Education Leadership Department at the Kremen School of Education at Fresno State. She reiterated that Superintendent Nelson will continue serving as our Superintendent through July 31st, 2024. Deputy Superintendent shared her gratitude for Superintendent Nelson’s leadership during his tenure, and during his upcoming 6-month transition, noting this gift of stability.
  • Deputy Superintendent shared that she and Superintendent Nelson taught at the same elementary school and actually became principals on the same night at the same board meeting, sharing what a privilege it has been to come up through the system alongside one another. She shared the deep privilege it has been to serve as his Deputy Superintendent for the past three years and how much she has learned from him during that time.
  • Deputy Superintendent shared her full confidence in our Board of Education to lead our system through an effective transition, thanking them for their steadfast leadership and commitment to stability. She thanked them for their leadership which has led to our district benefitting from unheard of stability, having just two superintendents over the past almost 20 years.
  • Deputy Superintendent then shared a few shoutouts and invitations including:
    • Join us at tomorrow’s Sunnyside Regional Family Engagement event from 5pm-7pm at Sunnyside High School’s main gym,
    • Congratulations to King’s Magical Teacher, Carlanda Williams, for being selected as a LEGO education ambassador, just one of 78 selected across the nation,
    • Join us this Saturday, January 27th from 10am-1pm at the Fresno Convention Center for our Black Voices in Education event,
    • Please join us as we kick off Black History Month with our 10th Annual Black History Month Program at Roosevelt’s Audra McDonald Theater at 6pm on February 1st,
    • All aspiring teachers, please join us at our upcoming Aspiring Teacher Expo at McLane on February 1st from 4pm-6pm to learn more about our pipeline programs and funding opportunities, and
    • Lastly, Deputy Superintendent shared the following video celebrating our front office teams that have received the Golden Heart Customer Service Award.
