Summary of the Board of Education Meeting on February 7th, 2024

The February 7th, 2024 meeting of the Board of Education began with no announcements out of closed session.

Next, Jill Venkatesan and Leilah Moore of Bullard High School led the flag salute.

Next, the Board of Education heard from the DeWolf High School Student Advisory Board Members.

Next, Superintendent Nelson provided a brief report to the Board of Education, including:

  • Superintendent Nelson started his remarks sharing several recognitions in February including:
    • Black History Month including the 10th Annual Black History Month program last week and this weekend’s upcoming visit to Allensworth state park,
    • National School Counseling Week including a celebration for counselors on Thursday and asking schools to send group photos of their counselors to for shoutouts this week, and
    • Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, recognizing that the building of healthy relationships begins long before adolescence. Superintendent shared we have launched a district-wide healthy relationships campaign and staff can access resources through your Employee Zone email.
  • Superintendent Nelson then shared several event announcements and shoutouts including:
    • The need for volunteer judges for our 17th Tournament of Technology coming in March and April – no technology experience necessary – check your Employee Zone email to sign up.
    • The HBCU Caravan Tour happening on Tuesday, February 13th from 9am-12pm at Sunnyside High School. Junior and seniors will be able to meet with representatives of more than 25 HBCUs who are ready to waive application fees, offer admission, and even offer scholarships on the spot. Check out this story from last year’s HBCU Caravan Tour where one of our students received a $52,000 scholarship on the spot!
    • Also on the 13th is the Teacher Recruitment Fair from 4-7pm at McLane in the cafeteria. Applications must be completed and submitted by February 12th and qualified applicants will be sent an invitation to attend the event. Apply here.
    • Superintendent then invited all to next Friday’s (2/16) Edison Regional Family Engagement Event at Gaston Middle School from 5-7pm. The evening will include fun, food, learning, and students will walk away with free books to take home.
    • Superintendent then made a shout out to the Health, Safety and Emergency Response team for their new Health and Safety Minute video series. You can find those videos on our social media, ParentSquare, and our Vimeo page.
    • Last, Superintendent Nelson recognized the amazing work that went into putting on a successful Excellence in Education event last week with 760 guest, 61 nominees, and six award winners. Superintendent shared this recap video of the event and shouted out winners Terrie Spalding, Michael Robinson, Bitor Bravo Pena, Debbie Duran, Aida Flores, and Nicole Potter.

  • Approved Addendum to the Agreement with Orchid Interpreting Inc.
  • Approved Award of Bid 24-31, Bullard High School Gyms Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Improvement Project
