Summary of the Board of Education Meeting on February 21st, 2024

The February 21st, 2024 meeting of the Board of Education began with the following announcements out of closed session:

  • The Board of Education took action in closed session to promote Carson Wood to Principal V at Farber Educational Campus.
  • The Board of Education took action in closed session to promote Guadalupe Ponce to Principal II at Williams Elementary School.

Next, the Board of Education heard from the Sunnyside Student Advisory Board Members.

Next, Superintendent Nelson provided a brief report to the Board of Education, including:

  • Superintendent Nelson shared several highlights and shoutouts including:
    • Parent University and Trustee Keshia Thomas for a fantastic Edison Regional Family Engagement Event at Gaston this past Friday evening. More than 500 families participated in fun, food, and learning where students went home with new books.
    • Congratulations to Design Science’s Academic Decathlon team! Design Science took 3rd place overall and took home the award for the most improved team. Design Science increased their scores by 19% over last year! Congratulations to the entire team and to coach Lisa Portela!
    • Shoutout to Greenberg 4th grader Alden Yang who won the district Spelling Bee! Grayson Dominguez, a sixth grader from Powers-Ginsburg Elementary School, placed second and Tara Plascencia, a fourth grader from Manchester GATE Elementary School, placed third at the fun event at Fresno High School’s Royce Hall. Twenty-eight schools participated. Alden and Grayson will represent Fresno Unified at the Fresno County Spell-Off on March 19. Congratulations!
    • Kudos to Teacher Kati Begen and her students at Duncan for participating in the National Geographic Citizen Scientist’s project! Superintendent shared this video with those at the board meeting, and Kati and her students were also highlighted by ABC30 here.
    • Last, Superintendent gave thanks to our Customer Service Team and all schools and departments that have adopted the use of the Let’s Talk tool. Let’s Talk is a tool through our website that helps ensure constituents can get their questions and concerns addressed quickly and effectively. Superintendent shared this video with more information.
