Summary of the Board of Education Meeting on December 7th, 2022

The December 7th, 2022 meeting of the Board of Education began with the following announcements out of closed session:

  • The Board took action in closed session on a worker’s compensation case.

Next, Superintendent Nelson provided a brief report to the Board of Education, including:

  • Superintendent Nelson started his remarks acknowledging and thanking Trustee Major Slatic for his years of service to the Fresno Unified Board of Education and opened the floor to Trustees who shared the same.
  • Superintendent Nelson then recognized National Special Education Day which was celebrated on December 2nd. He shared that our district serves over 9,000 students receiving specialized services and thanked our Special Education department, staff, and all who serve our students receiving specialized services.
  • Superintendent Nelson also congratulated Board Clerk Islas for being awarded as a Champion of Immigrant America by the Central Valley Immigrant Integration Collaborative (CVIIC).
  • Superintendent shared that due to the negotiated contingency language in our collective bargaining agreements, most* Fresno Unified staff will be receiving an ongoing 6% pay raise retroactive to July 1st, 2022 as well as a one-time 0.5% payment based on your 2021-2022 base salary. Staff will receive a separate check on or around December 15th which includes the retroactive pay and one-time payment. You will see the ongoing 6% salary increase in all future regularly scheduled paychecks. Superintendent shared his gratitude to be able to provide this pay raise and one-time payment in a financially responsible way due to the negotiated contingency language in our CBAs.
  • Superintendent reminded folks of our fall eFUel tournament this Saturday at Sunnyside High School. Matches start at 8:30am, with the finals scheduled for 2:30pm. If you’re not able to join in person, you can watch the livestream on Twitch at fresnounifiedesports.
  • Superintendent encouraged all teachers to sign up for the winter PL Summit happening Thursday, January 5th and Friday, January 6th. Many great sessions are scheduled and you can find the schedule by clicking here. Make sure to register in iAchieve before December 31st. All questions can be directed to Edith Navarro.
  • Superintendent gave a couple of shoutouts to the Foundation for Fresno Unified Schools. First, for their first annual Giving Tuesday campaign which brought in 180 donors and more than $10,000 in a single day for student scholarships. Second, for receiving a generous donation from Councilmember, and Assemblymember-elect, Esmeralda Soria. Councilmember Soria graciously donated $20,000 to support student scholarships in the Fresno High area. Superintendent reminded folks that our district cannot and does not provide scholarship assistance through our district funding (taxpayer dollars), so every dollar raised by the Foundation is so impactful to make those resources available to our students for their post-secondary journeys.
  • Last, Superintendent shared an update regarding our district’s rollout of ParentSquare as our district- and school-to-home communication platform. He shared that about 70 of our schools are learning to use ParentSquare currently and have already begun posting and interacting with families through the platform. Superintendent shared he wants to see even more principals, vice principals, counselors, teachers, and coaches using the platform and that professional learning will be offered at the upcoming PL Summit. You can also get direct support from our Communications team. Superintendent shared this testimonial from Principal Gengozian at Manchester GATE, an early adopter of the ParentSquare platform!
